Gilbert Sanseau – Software engineer from France
It takes a certain kind of person to find the south of France boring but luckily for Wellington that is exactly what Gilbert Sanseau and his partner found.
“We were disillusioned with France, with the election of Sarkozy and wanted to live in a small, green country; New Zealand fitted the bill”.
Making the move to the other side of the world was not difficult as Gilbert explains, “We started researching the migration process and due to my IT skills, it was really easy. The process is nearly entirely web-based and well documented”
Back in 2007 when Gilbert was looking online for IT Jobs he found that Wellington had the lion’s share of the vacancies. “I contacted a recruitment agency, Beyond Recruitment, and they found me work as a software engineer at TelstraClear. An added bonus was that I got more immigration points working in Wellington than Auckland.”
In the early 2000’s Gilbert spent time living in America, this engagement with the English language had a powerful influence over his decision to live in NZ. “I enjoy speaking English and I assumed my partner knew how to speak English but when we arrived I realised that she was not as proficient as I thought!”
“Wellington has good English language schools which helped her to learn English well enough to pass her IELTS test. She first worked in a French restaurant then as her English improved she worked in a supermarket until finally she is working in her profession as an accountant.”
Finding accommodation was also easy for Gilbert and his partner. “We took a backpackers for the first ten days, then moved into a furnished flat, easily found thanks to trademe.co.nz, eventually settling in Island Bay in an unfurnished house.”
In his spare time Gilbert likes to load up his stationwagon and head to the great outdoors “My partner and I both enjoy the outdoors, we spend every weekend hiking or mountain biking around New Zealand.
“Wellington is great , the central position in the country makes it very easy to visit both islands, as I am also here to discover the country and the Kiwis."
