Living here is easy. Wellington is concentrated and compact. It’s easy to get around and our sense of community and connectedness is strong. We offer all the benefits of a big city and region but without the hassle. Read why Wellington is rated tops in the

Wellington's CBD is just two kilometres in diameter and you can walk from one side to the other in about 20 minutes.
The rest of the region is also easily accessible by road, rail and air. Daily commute times are often short - 30 minutes, usually less. Some people choose longer commutes from the Kapiti Coast or the Wairarapa, enjoying the contrast of coastal or rural living with the city's buzz. The region enjoys the best public transport infrastructure in New Zealand. It’s the best used too. 30% of people commute daily by bus or train and walk or cycle to work.
A sense of community
Wellington’s small scale means that everyday life is straight forward. There is enough time in the evenings to go windsufing, take the children to a park, or have friends over for a drink. Social networks and a strong community spirit are easily maintained.
Safe
